What is ITLS?

ITLS International is a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing trauma education. ITLS began as the dream of an emergency physician from Alabama. In January, 1985, the first meeting of ITLS International took place, providing a basis for the organization’s growth. Now, more than a decade later, ITLS International has more than 60 chapters and has trained tens of thousands of individuals in trauma care using a tried and proven method endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The TN-GA ITLS Consortium is a chapter of Tennessee ITLS which belongs to ITLS International.

Dr. James Creel, M.D. is our medical director, and the author of the first chapter of the textbook. “Mechanism of Injury” is an important concept to grasp in anticipating injuries that may not be readily visible. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Creel in our region providing patient care and oversight of our chapter.

Most anyone with prior medical training (i.e. EMT, EMT-IV, Paramedic, LPN, RN, PA, MD, RT) can attend the course. The Course Agenda is basically lecture/discussion during the morning and hands-on training after the lunch break. The simulated patients are moulaged to provide a more realistic scenario for the student to practice their skills. The instructors represent various agencies and have a desire to teach an organized assessment and treatment approach to the trauma patient.

The TN-GA ITLS Consortium was founded in 1988 by area agencies dedicated to improving patient care delivered to the trauma patient. Utilizing a structured approach to trauma assessment, and leading skills and procedures, ITLS soon became the leading trauma course in the region. The history of the Consortium has undergone several changes since its inception; however, our purpose has remained the same.

In addition to the Basic and Advanced Provider courses, the Pediatric ITLS Course is now available in this area. Continue to check the Course Schedule for the next course you may want to attend.
